What is the Montessori Method of teaching?
Maria Montessori once said, “A child’s work is to create the person she will become.” That philosophy is important to remember when a child is learning the Montessori way. Maria theorized that a child should be free to discover and use their innate mental powers. A Montessori classroom allows the children freedom to explore the environment, but also teaches self discipline and some order. Read More...
Our preschool program invites the child to a prepared environment where he/she is free to explore and learn without interruption. The environment is beautiful and organized drawing the child to areas of interest and meeting the child’s developmental needs. This structured environment gives the child concrete experiences where visual impressions are stored for later learning. Links to nature are seen throughout the classroom with the use of natural materials such as wood shelving and wood tables and plants. We bring in as much from the outdoors as possible. Children are responsible to take care of their classroom and are accountable to each other promoting social awareness and independence. Learning is never forced and comes naturally through the materials that the child is drawn to work with. Our primary goal for the child is that he/she reaches full potential and independence.

Montessori Math
Concrete forms of mathematics are taught before the abstract form. Your child is first taught the quantity of 1-10 with the number rods before symbols of 1-10 are introduced. From here on mathematics is explored with a variety of experiences with the teacher following the natural order of the child’s development.
Montessori Language
The preschool child is in their sensitive period for sensory experiences and drawn to materials that appeal to this time in their development. Language is taught through the use of sandpaper letters. When the young child is ready for this material, a natural curiosity and interest will occur and learning is absorbed through the child’s sense of touch, sight and sound.
Practical Life
The activities in a practical life area are the foundation of a Montessori environment. This is where the child learns co-ordination, control of movement, concentration, a sense of order and a sense of community. This area empowers the child through his success with the materials and enhances his self image.
